From Brain Tumor to 70.3 Finish line; Rockstar Triathlete Neil Solomon

    Coach’s Notes:

Neil and I go WAY back. But I had not heard from him in quite a few years. He told me his Ironman goal and I did say it was possible, but we may want to take a bit more time to get stronger and faster since he had taken so much time away from sport.

We decided to forge ahead with a caveat to change of course as needed. So he joined my Triathlon Transformation Program and we got to work with my Nutrition Essentials and Strength and Mobility Essentials.

Neil lost over 30 lbs, and even got his 6-pack abs back! We did identify a few imbalances in his strength and mobility assessments and are happy to say most of those were corrected despite a few strains along the journey.

Next was dialing in his biomechanics on the swim, bike, and run with video analysis and testing. His massive improvements across the board are impressive.

Some of his other big wins were switching from fear to speed on the bike, struggle to enjoyment on the swim, and injury to strong and steady on the run.

It is never a straight line from start to finish in your training journey to long-course triathlon, but I have methods to keep the fitness improving while athletes recover and continue to progress.

I could not be more proud of Neil’s success at the Cozumel 70.3. Coming within 10 minutes of his predicted race time, given the conditions, with a 6:41 is impressive. This kind of success after recovering from a brain tumor and not much fitness is pretty EPIC!

Way to go, Neil, you are a true Rock Star Triathlete! So excited for what’s next…

Thanks so much for choosing Full Circle Coaching for your triathlon Journey! Congratulations!

Why you chose FCC to help you on your triathlon/health and wellness journey?

I go back a long way with FCC to when I was doing my first sprint triathlons in my late 20s or early 30s. Erinne brings tremendous knowledge and unparalleled expertise to any athlete looking to excel in all three disciplines. Beyond the sport itself, but directly related, Erinne’s understanding of nutrition, supplementation, a healthy lifestyle, and a holistic perspective is extremely valuable to any training regimen.

What is your “A” race for this season?

Cozumel 70.3 was my “A” race for the season.

Please share your BIG goals: My big goals in life or my big goals related to triathlon?

My big goal in life is to be the best husband, father, family man, friend, and businessman I can be. To make a positive impact on as many people as possible every day – to coach.

My BIG goals in Triathlon are to become a competitive Age Grouper, challenging for podium positions regularly whether competing in Sprints, Internationals, or Olympics. Also, to push my limits in 70.3s and significantly cut my time to under 6 hours towards 5 hours. Finally, to complete at least 1 Full Ironman140.6. Along the way, to get, remain, and stay emotionally, mentally, and physically healthy through improvement to reach these triathlon goals.

Tell me about your successes so far:

    This year has been unique.

Not to get dramatic, but most of my athletic focus and training stopped six years ago when I was diagnosed with a brain tumor. A combination of factors post multiple surgeries led to some weight gain, and while I got “back to the gym,” it was the first time I had ever gone multiple months, let alone multiple years, without any cardio training.

So, to kick off 2022, I decided that would change. A friend motivated me to get started on an old bike, and as that got a little traction, I added some light running. By March, I reached out to Erinne and Full Circle Coaching to begin training for a long course race. A lifelong goal!

Success 1, committing to a healthy lifestyle, and to that end, I dropped over 30 pounds, and my blood work went from not-so-good to perfect. My body changed significantly, my clothing fit (smaller sizes), and I looked and felt healthier and more energetic.

Success 2, learning to be patient, mainly as aches and pains arose that I had never dealt with before. Again, I had never gone so long without training, so the joint pain and the slight muscle pain, the reduced flexibility, and deteriorated muscular strength, let alone severely less cardiovascular capability, all required a level of patience that took some getting used to. Attention to little details mattered, which required a change in mindset, which was fully supported and inspired by Coaches Erinne, Ollie, and Jac.

Success 3 was competing in a couple of sprints and an Olympic in the spring and early summer while recovering from a nagging calf issue.

Success 4 was an exceptional experience and achievement this past weekend at my A race – Cozumel 70.3…which brings me to:

Success 5 is my decision to postpone IM Florida 140.6 and acknowledge that patience is a virtue. To have a positive experience in a FULL Ironman, with all that I am contending with pre/post-Cozumel, and that thing called life requires a bit more training and an even more significant commitment to consistency and attention to detail in the training sessions.  As I have said for years, you can’t fake a full Ironman. I know that, I believe that, and I am proud of myself for putting whatever ego and pride aside to reset and refocus my training to accomplish that FULL goal in 2023.

What were some of your biggest Improvements in performance for each of the following? Swim, Bike, Run, and Nutrition/Health. Please include any Personal Records and Goals achieved:

First and foremost, I learned a lot about training. About HR, POWER, ZONES, etc., etc., stuff that MATTERS! Particularly as you start going long course.

With regards to the SWIM, Cozumel’s SWIM was the biggest positive delta I have ever achieved in any athletic endeavor concerning expectation vs. performance. All through training, while my swim technique improved, I remained relatively slow vs. my peers, swimming long swims at around 2:30 per 100 yards. As such, I anticipated a swim north of 50 minutes, and my goal was to break 50 minutes. I swam Cozumel in 35 MINUTES (1:53 per 100); never did I think that was possible. And even more impressive, yards 1000 – 1500 were at a 1:38 per 100-yard pace. I was blown away. All the frustration and struggle with technique both in the pools and in the open water paid off in Cozumel as I finally found my form and “felt the water”!

The Bike journey has been spectacular. Highlighted by my first 55 and 75-mile rides and then multiple 50-60ish mile rides in training. What started as struggling to maintain 15mph became comfortable and strong at 20mph. What was being dropped by groups riding at 22mph became me pulling for those same groups at 24mph—all driven by better technique, better fitness, and, yes, a better bike. I went from the guy afraid to train in cycling because it is dangerous and uncomfortable to the guy who prefers cycling over the other two disciplines and looks forward to improving further.

My sub-3-hour Cozumel 70.3 56-mile ride and my Loggerhead Sprint ride of 13 miles averaging almost 22 mph are the highlights of this season.

With regards to the RUN, just being able to complete Loggerhead and then Cozumel was a huge achievement, considering the calf issue. That said, learning about techniques such as dry needling, flossing, and others, are valuable pieces of information. Running Loggerhead well under 9-minute miles without pain was a tremendous achievement. I was also proud of training 8-10 miles several times at roughly 10-minute miles, considering how long I was away from running. And while the Cozumel run was brutal, my legs, lungs, and heart held up for 2:48 in 100-degree temperature, and I also take tremendous pride in that. Knowing I tested months ago at a 6:30 minute mile and likely could break 6:00 today bodes well for future training and races as my body recalls the 11 marathons and multiple half marathons. I have run and know that to go 13 miles sub 7:30 is possible, as are the correlated speeds at the shorter distances. Been there, done that… will get back there again.

Name 2 or 3 things that have made the biggest difference in your journey:

    1. Eating clean.
    2. Being FULLY committed to the high-quality training days that I can get to consistently. This year it was Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. I hope to add another day or even two as I close the year. But those four days, I was religious about them. And quite honestly, that schedule allowed me to rest and recover, which was probably appropriate for this past cycle.
    3. I had and have lots of fun! I trained with a smile the VAST MAJORITY of the time!

What excites you the most about being involved in triathlon?

The people – I have said for 25 years, “You will not meet a nicer group of people than those you will meet involved in endurance sports!” Cozumel did not disappoint, as has happened often at the end of past races of mine; as I was struggling through mile 12 of the run, some pro or top age grouper, I guess doing his cool down two hours later, comes running the opposite way with nothing but words of encouragement, even ran with me for like 20 yards. It’s a special group of people! The Full Circle Tribe fits that description, “a special group of people,” as well or better than any team out there.

Also, I love to test myself. And triathlon allows you to do that in ways that I would have thought were done for me when I left high school and that portion of my athletic career. Mentally, physically and emotionally, triathlons of any size, shape, or form test your abilities, your conditioning, your strength, and most of all your discipline!

What would you say to someone on the fence about joining our training program?

Whether a true beginner, a novice, an intermediate, or an experienced accomplished triathlete, FULL CIRCLE Coaching has a program for you.  That said, be prepared to take in A LOT of information quickly. Don’t allow yourself to be overwhelmed. Be willing to ask lots of questions. It is not, “Hey, let’s go for a little swim, a casual bike ride, or a Sunday jog.” It is a sport, but it is very much a science, and FC focuses on the science of it. So be prepared to learn a lot and even be a bit intimidated by all the data and tech. Just know it is all there to keep you healthy and make you better!

This could be you! You too can become the triathlete you always dreamed of! APPLY Here!

  • Be intentional in living the life you want

Be intentional in living the life you want

Most people spend a lifetime clear on what they DON’T want for themselves.

That creates a constant state of yearning for more.

But it’s confusing for our brains because we often don’t get clear enough to tell our brain what we actually desire.

This creates a low likelihood of ever getting what we actually want – it’s because we aren’t being completely intentional.

A lot of people go years and years LIVING like that. Just doing it for no certain reason. Or for all reasons. Or for any reasons.

But if you want to get somewhere – if you want to create the thing that you want – then you must be intentional.

    • Why am I doing this?
    • Who’s it for?
    • What result do I want – and when?

It’s how you begin to establish a life of meaning.

A life that means what you want it to mean. That should include a healthy lifestyle, a proper weight, a good relationship with food, etc.

A life of meaning must include other priorities, too.

But priorities are, by definition, not haphazard. And healthy habits don’t just form on their own.

Choose to live the life you envision for yourself. Then … CREATE IT!

    Rockstar Swimmer: Tim Skladzien

    Coach’s Notes:

I was psyched to hear from Tim when he reached out to me to train for Alligator Lighthouse swim.

He joined my Swim Essentials virtual training program since he lives in Illinois and we started with the video analysis and swim testing.

From there I gave him specific drills to correct his form along with swim specific strength and stretches as well as his online training program to reach his maximum potential for the 8-mile open water swim race.

Seeing him in our biweekly group coaching calls and checking in on his form monthly allowed him to achieve success despite never having swum in the open ocean for a race like this. He had a personal record in his 5k in Lake Michigan along the way to success in a very wavy open ocean Alligator Lighthouse swim. Super Proud of you Tim. Congratulations – You are a Rockstar Swimmer!

    Age:

    30

    Profession:

Aquatics Manager at Foglia YMCA in Lake Zurich, IL

Why you chose FCC to help you on your triathlon/health and wellness journey?

I heard about FCC when I searched Alligator Lighthouse on Youtube and a video of Coach Erinne talking about her experience swimming popped up and chose to go with FCC to work on my journey of training for the 8-mile ocean swim.

What is your “A” race for this season?

My A race was the Alligator Lighthouse swim.

    Please share your BIG goals:

To do another ocean swim in 2024. Maybe stick to a fresh water swim race Summer of 2023? Yet to be determined.

Tell me about your successes so far:

Completing my first ever Alligator Lighthouse swim in 6:37 min. It was tough being from the Midwest where we don’t have access to the ocean like Floridians do. However, I did my best given the fact that the current and waves were tough in getting to the lighthouse.

What were some of your biggest Improvements in performance for the each of the following? Swim, Bike, Run, and Nutrition/Health. Please include any Personal Records and Goals achieved:

PR time achieved for 3 mi Lake Michigan swim.

Name 2 or 3 things that have made the biggest difference in your journey:

    1. Support from Family and Friends.
    2. Support from my work of allowing me to make this swim happen.
    3. My brother doing an amazing job on navigating as my kayaker.

What excites you the most about being involved in triathlon?

While I am currently not training for any triathlons, the only thing that excites me is competing against other swimmers in the race and training races.

What would you say to another person who was on the fence about joining our training program?

Have fun with training, work hard and do your best!

  • You Either Do or You Don’t

You Either Do or You Don’t

In this fast-paced, high-pressured world, life is ALWAYS happening around us.

So many things are beyond your control – all the people and institutions and natural events of the world really have nothing to do with you!

But here’s what you can control: your own words and actions.

You can listen to your heart, acknowledge your desires and disappointments, and then let go and surrender to this wondrous, empowering constant of the universe: What you do is all up to you.

Success isn’t just what happens TO you or AROUND you. It’s what you do about it YOURSELF.

It’s the choices you make day after day, situation after situation.

Look at this relatively minor example to see what I mean.

Let’s say you’ve recently committed to running outside three times a week, but your town has been hit with thunderstorms every day.

    What do you do?

Stay home and channel surf? Or go to the gym and use a treadmill?

    Another example:

You go out with friends who order heavy appetizers and rounds of beers, do you join in because you feel like you have to, knowing you’ll regret it later? Or do you enjoy sensibly so you can stay on track?

Seriously – these are the kinds of little situations that we all face every day. And it’s through making the right choices that we succeed.

It’s called going with the flow.

It’s not called blaming someone or something else for a situation that is out of our control.

So – decide right now: When it comes to taking care of yourself, are you in or are you out?

Ask me about my Nutrition Reset that starts in October.

  • Stop the Pity Party!

    Stop the pity party!

I’d like you to please remember to be in the present moment and be grateful for all that your mind and body do for you on a daily basis in your training and racing.

    Everyone has moments of:
Why am I training for this?
What am I doing out here (in the middle of a race)?
    This hurts!
    I suck!
    I’m so slow!
    Everyone is passing me!

However, you have control over your thoughts and you can choose to change them to focus on your process and what you do have control over rather than the outcome.

    Choose to focus on YOUR:
    Breathing
Posture, falling forward and rpms on the run
Perfect circles and power on the bike
    Numbers
Nutrition to fuel the action and
All the amazing things your body is doing for you in the moment.

Use your data from your training and racing as a motivator to see what is working well and what still needs focus, not an opportunity to put yourself down!

    Cancel all this negative talk!
    It’s B.S.!!!

    Seriously.

So, Step 1. I want you to exhaust yourself with:

    • All the excuses.
    • All the starting and stopping.

  • The Present moment, Life or Death

The Present Moment, Life or Death

If you know me at all, you know I love the ocean, swimming and free diving as well as breath work, breath holding and meditation. They are all a big part of my life.

I found this Ted talk given by a famous free diver that really spoke to me about the importance of letting go of the outcome and focusing on the present moment.

He summarizes the point that if he does not stay in the present moment he could die.

I know that sounds extreme and a little scary, but in the case of the free diver speaking, it is completely true.

He takes you on a journey of a free dive with no fins down to the deepest darkest water and how amazing he feels in neutral buoyancy, and what the body does to preserve his oxygen and save his brain function to only be able to focus on the present moment.

    The here and now.

He describes when he gets the flag at the very bottom point, it is pitch black and his lungs are screaming at him to breath; he has a choice, and this is when it gets hard, he has to work harder to get back up to the surface to breath again, but he is a LOOOONNNNGGG way down.

If he thinks for 1 second about how far it is to the surface, he will lose the ability to do what he needs to do to get there, to take that breath of life at the surface. He can only focus on the reach and the catch and pull of his arms and remaining calm to get back to breathing.

That is a choice he has to make to survive!

    Now, that is pressure!

Please watch and listen and participate as he takes you on this journey because it is a truly beautiful experience.

Then ask yourself where you are making choices to live in the outcome, instead of the present moment. And because it seems so over whelming and even paralyzing you are fucking it all up!

I am certainly guilty of this, and I can say with certainty every human is at some point.

But here again, we have a choice, just like the free diver, to stay in the present moment and do the next right thing to keep us moving toward the life, the dream that we so desire.

Most of us are not in a place where it is life or death situation, as this man’s is, or maybe it is!

But you can see how much he loves it and how passionate and alive he is because of it despite the risk.

What if you could think about your life this way. How much more passion and productivity could come out of your days, weeks, months and years by being in the her and now.

What are you dreaming of doing that you have put off because instead of thinking about the next right step to take, you are future tripping about how hard it will be, how long it will take.

    I’m ready, Are you?

  • Numbers Matter

    Numbers Matter

Numbers Matter: Paying attention to numbers during training will help you improve drastically.

Numbers are everywhere, but are you giving them any energy?

Ever Heard of the Law of Attraction? What you focus on improves.

It could not be more true with your numbers.

    Numbers to focus on:

Heart Rate, RPE (rate of perceived exertion), RPMs, Pace/ speed/ or power.

It does not matter what level triathlete you are, if you are not assessing yourself with baseline numbers and then training and racing according to those numbers, you are simply guessing at what you are truly capable of.

    So, start tracking those numbers!

Even if you think it’s hard, guess what? You can do hard things.

But, in actuality, it’s really simple and truly makes training easy because it is based on your individual numbers.

    I believe in you!

  • Ironman ALASKA Rockstar Triathlete; Rosa King

Ironman ALASKA Rockstar Triathlete; Rosa King

    Coach’s Notes:

I was thrilled to be chosen as a part of Rosa’s return to triathlon after so many years. Her will to push through to the very end is so inspirational.

Last year we spent a lot of time on short course triathlon to implement some faster training and strength building to then go long on a very hilly course in Alaska.

Ultimate Tri Camp was also a key part of the journey in learning how to ride the hills with more efficiency.

Race day turned an already challenging course into an even more difficult event with the cold and rain.

Never did I doubt Rosa would finish, as I said, her will to fight is so strong! Even though it was not a PR (Personal Record) for the distance. It’s important to look at each part of the race and where you improved.

Her swim was the biggest improvement along with her nutrition. So now you can take these new skills into your next races with confidence.

Congratulations Rosa, once again you are an Ironman!

    Age:

    50!!!!!

    Profession:

    Pharmacist, Motivational Speaker

Why you chose FCC to help you on your triathlon/health and wellness journey?

I’ve known Erinne since 2000, she trained me for my 2nd marathon (Disney Marathon 2001) and 1st Ironman (Great Floridian 2004). Then I moved to Georgia for 12 years.  When I moved back to Miami, I knew who I wanted to train with again.  Coach Erinne knows her stuff and I knew that she would get me ready for my next Ironman.

What is your “A” race for this season?

    Ironman Alaska 2022

    Please share your BIG goals:

To finish this very challenging Alaska Ironman Course: Swim 2.4 miles in cold water 56 degrees, Bike 112 miles (5,825 feet of total elevation), Run 26.2 miles (1306 feet of total elevation) all within 17 hours.

Tell me about your successes so far:

After 21 years of racing, I’ve won 1st, 2nd, & 3rd places in all the different triathlon distances (Sprint, Olympic, and 1/2 Ironman) last year 2021 in my age division.

Last week, August 7th, 2022,  I was able to finish one of the hardest Ironman course under very harsh weather conditions.  A girl from Miami who only trained in the heat 80-90 degrees was going to go to Alaska to swim in very cold water, bike & run in hilly elevations, rainy and cold weather.  I was very nervous but I knew that I had trained the hardest that I could.  I finished!!

What were some of your biggest Improvements in performance for the each of the following? Swim, Bike, Run, and Nutrition/Health. Please include any Personal Records and Goals achieved:

Name 2 or 3 things that have made the biggest difference in your journey:

    1. Nutrition = in previous races, I would bonk towards the end.  This Ironman, I had energy to finish the course and I could have kept going.

    2. Swimming = I learned not to panic in the water, I stayed calm and found a rhythm, “Swim long and strong,”  “Bubble, Bubble, breathe.”

    3. Bike = I was able to change my gears faster and pedal more efficiently

What excites you the most about being involved in triathlon?

Finishing the races.  Whenever the weather is not favorable, I’m always confident that my Full Circle Training will get me to the finish line.  I always finish!!

What would you say to another person who was on the fence about joining our training program?

Do not hesitate.  If someone like me with minimal swimming or cycling background can finish a very tough Ironman in Alaska, then anyone who really puts in the work can do it.

Do not let your genetics, previous failures, body type, or financial status hold you back.  There’s no price in investing in your health.  You do not have to spend a lot of money.  Make a commitment and go for it.  There are local races right here in Miami to start your journey.  You can learn to swim like I did as an adult, buy an economical bike, and a good pair of running shoes.

Our Full Circle Tribe will guide you to what nutrition you’ll need and even let you borrow their stuff (goggles, trikits, swim paddles, etc..) before you buy your own.  I chose to do another Ironman after 8 years because I wanted to challenge myself as I was turning 50, and I choose Alaska because I knew it would be hard.  I did it!!  I had never swam in cold water ever.  So I had to buy a full length wet suit, neoprene cap, and booties. I had only practiced swimming in my full sleeve wetsuit twice: once in San Francisco on a family trip 2021, and in Rainbow Springs, FL (72 degrees) a month before leaving to Juneau, AK.  I bought a new triathlon bike (BMC Time machine) and travelled to Clermont, FL several times to practice on the steep hills.  You do not need to buy a new and expensive bike, I still use my 18 year old Kestrel road bike when my BMC bike is in transport.  I did my long runs at night as per Coach Erinne at Key Biscayne by myself in the dark which came in handy when I was running in the dark rain forest in Alaska.

Also, I attended the Full Circle 2022 Ultimate Triathlon Camp during Spring Break.  I gained more triathlon knowledge, skills, and made lots of new friends whom have been cheering me on all year long.  I love my Full Circle Tribe because everyone is there to help you get better.  They all genuinely  want to see you reach your goals.  My Full Circle Tribe has become like a second family, we swim, bike, and run together.

    Coach’s Notes:

    Congratulations Rachel!

Over the summer I really noticed Rachel with a new sense of purpose and hitting her workouts in a committed way! It would only make sense she would end up on the podium at her summer Olympic distance race a few weeks ago.

Digging into her swim by attending Swim Essentials really helped identify some limiters in her technique and get to work on correcting them. But the key as always was the consistency in her training week after week!!

Way to go Rachel! Age Group Nationals 2023, here you come!!!!

    You are a Rockstar Triathlete!!!

Why you chose FCC to help you on your triathlon/health and wellness journey?

-Wanted to be part of a team with other triathletes.
-Wanted a Coach whose main priority was triathlons and not just a side hustle
-where coaching is available every day.
-I believed that FCC could finally help me improve my swim.
-Also, I chose Full Circle Coaching because I knew that the team focused on more than just racing but also total mind and body, a holistic approach.

What is your “A” race for this season?

Originally Heartland Triathlon on June 5, 2022 but I had nutrition mishaps so now my “A” race is Miami Man International Distance in November 2022

    Please share your BIG goals:

    Qualify for Age Group Nationals

My perfect Olympic race goal is:

    1500 Swim 00:41:01

    40k Bike 1:11:00

    10k Run 00:57:29

Tell me about your successes so far:

Swimming has been my biggest challenge. My swim threshold is 2:32 pace. At Key Biscayne Triathlon I swam a 2:27 pace in OPEN WATER! I would definitely credit the Swim Essentials class and the specific drills I received from my video analysis for improving my swim.

Training with a Bike power meter is a game changer. When I’m focused on the high cadence and my desired watts, I’m hitting speeds that I didn’t think were in my ballpark. Now I just need to bring all the components together such as distance, endurance, nutrition, etc. Eventually it will happen at a race.

Name 2 or 3 things that have made the biggest difference in your journey:

    1. Daily coaching either at practice or online through Training Peaks helps me stay on target and helps prevent me from getting injured especially with the recovery weeks.

    1. Nutrition, nutrition, nutrition!

What excites you the most about being involved in triathlon?

Triathlon has been part of my lifestyle for over 10 years. I began with FCC in 2018. Being part of a team brings excitement. My teammates encourage me.

My teammates are always signing up for something that I may or may not have thought of racing. They come back share their experience next thing you know I’m signing up for the race.

A prime example is, Key West Triathlon it is such a fun time. I have now done it several times.

Also, I had not planned on racing the Olympic distance at Key Biscayne until a couple of teammates encouraged me to sign up for this distance and it was that race I had one of my best swim times and got on the podium!

Even when I miss my goal I know that the next race will be better so I keep training.

What would you say to another person who was on the fence about joining our training program?
